When You Need A Compost Tumbler

Composting in a tumbler might be the most ideal method of composting  for your situation. Compost tumblers come with lots of advantages that other methods of composting don’t.  You’ve probably seen them before, they come in all shapes and sizes, but they all look something like this.

The very nature of compost tumblers allow you to turn your compost very easily. It’s even got handles! Plus it’s fun. It’s also an enclosed environment which has the double sided benefit of both insulting your cooking compost and keeping it hot, and also it will protect a little bit from bears, racoons and other pests.

Some of them even have a dual chamber system so you can pull from the finished compost section while continually “cooking” more on the other side. Think about your garden, and the compost needs you’ll have.

If you are planting many different species with different planting times, and also. You can  space out your compost production to have finished composting all season long. This also works well if you have a limited supply of material, like a small amount of kitchen scraps. You can cap the smaller section when it’s full and let it start to worm while.

One the major benefits of using a compost bin or tumbler is that it really helps keep pests away. While these may not be completely smell proof, they do reduce it drastically so the risk of pests is greatly reduced. These composters are normally made out of pretty strong plastic material no your average pest will have a great time.

Another great benefit of this method? It makes turning your compost pile a snap.  Rather than the vigorous work of turning the pile by hand, lifting heavy compost can be really hard on the back, and while there is obviously some work involved in turning a tumbler, it is much easier.
