Composting with worms is one of the most fun ways to recycle your food waste. These little guys have long been the darling beneficial creature for gardeners and environmentalists alike. Worm are voracious eaters, consuming a wide variety of waste, and as a bi-product they produce worm castings (poop). Worm castings are an amazing fertilizer for your garden. First you need a worm bin. You can construct your own fairly easily and with little to no financial investment. If you want full instructions on how to build your own, check it out below. This set of instructions is far better than anything I could come up with.

If you don’t feel like making your own, you can purchase one. There are a bunch of options out there for worm bins. Check some out below!

Some of them have sort of a stacking worm apartment set up.One huge advantage of this is that the worms continually move up to follow to food. Meaning you can keep adding food to the top, and as the worms rise to get it. They leave their castings behind for you to harvest.

Cons of composting with worms:

well I think that composting with worms as a method to recycle your food scraps and make your own healthy fertilizer he’s a great option there are some challenges and shortcomings of this method as well.

  1.  Not all organic waste can be recycled through this message. Worms are living creatures and as such they have their own particular. Worms like a small amount of grit for proper digestion.  but they cannot handle large amounts of fibers materials. If you were to  feeder worms Tire half of spaghetti squash hey, like I did last week. You would find at the worms can eat out squishy middle parts, and leave the house behind. The same will also go for corn husks, Citrus rinds, coconut coir.

they will also not eat onions or anything else in the onion family. It is also generally not considered good practice to feed them meat or any processed foods. Worms have a difficult time breaking down processed foods and turning it into fertilizer. And and niece will generally go bad begin to smell and attract flies well before the worms will ever consume it.  if your goal is to compost or recycle literally everything you can, worms cannot meet that need on their own you will need to add an other Compass methods in order to compost everything you can.

  1.  Maintaining a worm box requires some maintenance. You have to can you feed your worms. You have to continually add bedding ( shredded newspaper works great for this). You have to continually add small knots with moisture to make sure your worms do not dry out.
  2. Cost can be another consideration when deciding if you’re on a compost with worms. The ready to go worm bins can be pretty expensive. but you don’t need to necessarily buy one of those. You can also make your own rather inexpensively, but you will have to purchase the materials.  if you want to check out my favorite guide for building your own worm bin just check here. But I’ll run through the basics below.

you get started with your very own worm bin. The first thing you’re going to need is a turn for the worst house. I’ve used a 30 gallon storage tote. I’ve also seen worm bins with a 5 gallon bucket.

For  this example, Buy sell used 30 gallon storage tote like this one from Target.  The first thing I’m going to do is to drill holes in the side of the bin and also in the top good. There should be about 2825 holes in the top another 30 around the sides. It should ensure that are continually circulates inside the bin so your food scraps do not start smell, and your worms not suffocating.

The next step is to construct the one bedding. this is the happy Home in which your worms will live. It’s good to get some regular garden soil, fill up the bin about one third of the way, get some shredded newspaper and mix it in.  you want enough newspaper to absorb most of the moisture.  The ideal conceal worm bedding is not of a wrung-out sponge. Not too wet and not too dry. Once you constructed your worm bedding, it’s time to a  food source. remind yourself of the good foods to feed your worms from the list above and start collecting throughout the week.

Worms  will consume their own body weight in food every single day. So if you have a pound of worms (approximately 1000),  they can consume one pound of food scraps per day. They will live on less,  but they can consume that much and will need to do so for optimal breeding conditions. Best practice is to put your food in a corner away from the worms and let them find it naturally,  and when you’re ready to add more simply put it in the opposite corner of when the worms have gone.

That’s it! You just contracted your very own worm bin and you’re ready for worms.

 Maintenance of your bin

Maintenance of your worm bin  can be relatively hands-off, but there are some things you have to be aware of. One is to make sure that your worms are getting a sufficient quantity of food, but you also don’t want to overfeed them, as this can result in smothering your worms,  and also May results in a smelly bin. a smelly been is generally a sign that  something in your where are you from system is off. It could be too much water, not enough air, or the wrong kind of food.

You should also stir your worm bin every once in awhile. To make sure that enough air is circulating to all parts of your face, and that you’re worms are getting enough oxygen. It’s also a good opportunity to check the moisture levels,  so you can make adjustments as needed.
